Artificial hedges and living walls, installed in TexasOut of sight.Still green.

Your neighbor's second story looks straight into your yard. A hedge built to the right height can take that view away. No watering, no trimming.

A REAL TEXAS JOB: AUSTIN

Out of sight in Austin: 16 ft tall, 130 ft long.

The neighbor was remodeling, and the live screen in between was failing. Here is how that 130 ft run went green.

  1. Bare 16 ft wire mesh privacy screen behind young trees in an Austin backyard, before the install

    01Before

    A tall screen, thin cover.

A 16 ft wire mesh screen already stood between the two yards. The live planting on it could not keep up, and keeping it going took constant upkeep.

  2. Installer on a ladder fixing boxwood panels to the wire mesh screen

    02Install

Panels on the mesh. No new structure.

Boxwood panels went straight onto the existing mesh, with a screen backing behind them. The tall structure stayed; only the cover changed.

  3. Tall artificial boxwood privacy wall behind live oaks in an Austin backyard

    03After

Green on day one. Nothing to water.

130 ft of boxwood, 16 ft tall, behind the live oaks. The materials were picked for UV resistance in full Austin sun.

STEP 1 OF 2: MEASURE YOUR RUN

How long is the line you want green?

Pick a system and set the run. We draw it and do the arithmetic on our published starting prices. Installation is quoted after a site review.

The price is per linear foot at 6 ft tall and scales with height.

from $3,960

40 linear ft × $99 (6 ft tall) = $3,960

FOUR QUESTIONS

Four things everyone asks first.

  1. 01 / 04

    Will it look fake?

Leaf density and seams are what give artificial greenery away. Look at both up close, on real Texas jobs, before you decide.

  2. 02 / 04

Will Texas sun wear it out?

Standard foliage is UV-stabilized for outdoor sun. Indoor-grade foliage is not, and it can fade faster outside. Match the rating to your wall's exposure.

Drag the sun. Texas sun is the test outdoor foliage has to pass.

  3. 03 / 04

    Will my HOA allow it?

Many Texas HOAs review fence and landscaping changes. Texas Property Code Chapter 202 governs how HOA deed restrictions are enforced, but it does not promise approval. Read your HOA's rules, then submit specs and photos with your request.

    What will it cost?

Starting prices are published: hedge from $99 per linear ft on your fence or wall at 6 ft tall and from $200 per linear ft freestanding at 6 ft × 7 in, fence extension from $81 per linear ft at 3 ft over the fence, living wall from $18 per sq ft, privacy wall from $699 per unit. Installation is quoted after a site review, because access, mounting and run length drive it. Prices are for standard UV-stabilized foliage; fire-rated foliage costs extra.

FIRE CODE

Commercial jobs answer to the fire marshal.

Restaurants, retail and multifamily projects often need greenery with a documented fire rating. The test fire marshals ask for on decorative greenery is NFPA 701. Standard foliage is UV-stabilized for outdoor sun. Fire-rated foliage (NFPA 701) is an upgrade at extra cost, with documentation on request.

What it is
NFPA 701 is the flame propagation test for textiles, films and decorative materials: a sample is burned and judged on how far the flame spreads and whether flaming pieces drip.
Where it comes up
Many Texas cities adopt the International Fire Code, which points artificial decorative vegetation in many commercial buildings to NFPA 701, documented by the manufacturer.
What to ask for
If your project needs it, fire-rated foliage as an upgrade and the NFPA 701 documentation for your exact system, before you order. Then confirm the requirement with your fire marshal.

How a job runs.

  1. Send your numbers

Run, height, city, and photos if you have them. The estimator above fills in most of it.

  2. Rough quote

  3. Site review

Measurements, mounting and access are confirmed on site. That sets the final invoice.

  4. Build

Panels are cut and staged to your layout.

  5. Installer fixing hedge panels to a steel mesh fence

    Install

The run is mounted to your fence, frame or wall.

Project type

Questions, answered plainly.

Do artificial hedges need watering or trimming?

No watering and no trimming. Rinse off dust and pollen now and then.

Can it mount on my existing fence?

Often, yes. A hedge mounts on the face of many fences and walls, about 2 to 3 in deep. A freestanding hedge stands on its own posts, set in concrete. The site review confirms what your fence can carry.

Is it fire-rated?

Not as standard. Standard foliage is UV-stabilized for outdoor sun. Fire-rated foliage (NFPA 701) is an upgrade at extra cost, with documentation on request. NFPA 701 is the flame test fire marshals ask for on decorative greenery; your fire authority makes the final call on whether your project needs it.

How is the price set?

From published starting prices for each system, plus installation. You get a rough quote by email first; the site review sets the final invoice, because run length, mounting and site access drive installation.

Will my HOA approve it?

We cannot promise approval. Check your HOA's rules and submit product specs and photos with your request.

Does the price change with height?

For two systems, yes. A hedge on your fence or wall is priced at 6 ft tall and scales with height, so a taller one costs more per linear foot and a shorter one costs less. A fence extension is priced by how far it rises over your fence. The estimator above does the arithmetic as you move the height.
